Music : tacked on the end of this beautiful rending of a traditional Irish song known as “The Parting Glass”, is a lovely twisting harp tune Robin Williamson found during his significant researches of old Celtic lore. The tune was titled ‘The Tangled Thread’ and though the subject matter — lamenting over the twists of fate — fits well with that of the previous song, Robin did not care much for the verses. And so he amplified it into a lovely eloquent little instrumental piece. Probably hundreds of musicians have produced versions of the Parting Glass, and on any given Friday night in Kerry or Galway or even Boston, it is surely heard in hundreds of pubs. But I never heard one as evocative as this. From 1981 or thereabouts.

I once heard The Parting Glass sung at the end of an evening in a pub in Killarney Ireland many many years ago.
Glad to hear it Dracul! We used to use it as our standard closer in a Montreal pub ten years ago.
It is a great song with which to close out a pub evening.
Lovely song. There’s something about Irish music that speaks to the soul.
It’s true. Both the melodies and the lyrics of traditional Irish songs are very touching.
