A Dream (2026/10/18)

True account to the best of my recall. (Because the memory function rapidly deteriorates immediately upon crossing the membrane from sleeping to waking — the sudden influx of sensory inputs taxes one’s will in an overpowering way.) Note: look here to see other dream narrations within this series.

Preface Notes

This little seemingly pointless and very undramatic drama unfolded within my psyche during the hectic chaos hour or so one morning after I had already awoken but then returned to sleep after a sip of water because it felt entirely too early to begin my day yet. I have noted in the past that dreams which happen during this twilight transitional period, when various parts or organs of the body are almost awake, have a peculiar and unsettled quality often involving figures from my biography far far back in time, usually childhood. I seem to retain a great deal of familiarity with these individuals so encountered, recognizing them in the altered consciousness by their soul attributes as much as their appearance. Their connection to me often seems unpleasantly close, given the much dissimilar nature of my present day circle of acquaintances. There is something disturbing, vaguely disturbing, about their persisting eminance within my sphere.

I am with a family I knew during childhood. In various domestic scenarios with them. I am not a member of the family, but a known familiar associate. There are the two parents of my childhood friend. An older sibling or two. The friend is not present but implied… or possibly he is to arrive soon and it would be of some importance or significance that I meet him. The main characters are somehow the elderly parents. There is also a sister whom I am fond of and attracted to, and it is mutual. But it is unclear whether or not she will be available. Some food is offered while all are waiting, waiting. The friend’s mother is a good Italian cook. They do not seem to be judging me, but can peer easily into my shortcomings or imperfected virtues. Nothing happens; nothing resolves. I am hoping, looking forward to meeting the sister but it is not what is promised or expected. Meeting the childhood friend is what is expected. I am neutral about this. But he is delayed. Or some circumstance is not right. The impressions of the parents are vivid when I wake from the dream. Also the unfulfilled wish to meet the sister. It leaves behind an unrequited feeling.

Waking Thoughts

This was borderline a ‘nothing’ dream. Yet I feel it is important to include it because of the strange residue it left me feeling once I was awake and moving through my day. Some relevant context: the parents have not been alive for decades. The older siblings played very ancillary roles within my actual biography and I have no knowledge of their present fates. The childhood friend was discovered by me to have passed away about two years ago. Although we had significant contacts between the ages of 7 or so and maybe my late twenties, we travelled vastly different lifepaths since then, and lived far apart and had no contacts. Nor did I have much knowledge about him. The strange link is the sister. She and I became very close as adults and were together for nearly 20 years. It felt throughout the day that something of value or importance was perhaps to be transmitted (to me) but the dream vehicle or my wits failed in this. I do not know the present whereabouts of the sister. One thought which keeps near my orbit is that the excarnated souls of the two parents were ‘trying something’ in terms of communication, but what that is, I do not know. Also the thought has come that the reason a meeting with the childhood friend, the son, never materialized in the dream had something to do with his soul not yet being ready or capable. Because he was too much of a ‘newbie’ still in the spiritual realms. Very odd aftertaste, this dream!

Image : detail from Paul Klee’s 1916 oil painting ‘Presenting A Miracle‘. This painting, which I find curiously and inexplicably beautiful, seems to fit the mood of the described dream fragment(s) above. For in dreams of this kind, the individuals from my early biography seem engaged in almost absurd activities. They transmit or present to me in a language I am poorly equipped to understand. Yet the message seems of no small urgency.
